About Frank
I am born on 7 February 1959 in Amiens in France (133 Km north of Paris). I spent most of my childhood in Châlons-en-Champagne (174 Km east of Paris). I am married and have 2 boys, Yoran and Mathis. I am actually living in Indonesia with my family since July 2009.

My professional life was made of 5 main periods:

  1. The mistakes,
  2. Back to education,
  3. A new start as University Assistant-Professor,
  4. Joining the skies,
  5. The expatriation in Asia.

The mistakes
After different "small" jobs, I have spend four years in the French Railways as a safety officer and switchman, and one year as sports instructor.
These times were interesting, just because they helped me to understood I have made a big mistake leaving college.

Back to education
In 1981, I make a sound come back to education in oder to get a PhD (it has always been my first objective). During 8 years, in parallel with positions of swimming instructor I have studied in 5 different French universities in Paris:
  • all the psychology fields (with a main focus on cognitition and human error),
  • statistics,
  • Information technology and data analysis,
  • psychophysiology, neuro-psychology,
  • and even sexology.
I received a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the Université Paris V René Descartes in September 1999, with a study regarding how drivers build mental maps when they have to move in large urban cities. During my PhD years, I found the spark to start my dream of always: flying. In 1990, I got a Private Pilot Licence in France after 3 months of intense training, sharing my time with lectures and researches at the Université Paris V René Descartes. After my PhD, I left France for the United States, where I got a FAA Commercial Pilot Licence.

A new start as University Assistant-Professor
As the continuity of my PhD, I spent 13 years as a tenured assistant professor and researcher in 3 different French universities:
  1. Université Paris V René Descarte in Paris (1987-1999)
  2. Université de Picardie Jules Vernes in Amiens (1992)
  3. and Université Paris X Nanterre in Paris (1993-1999)
I made and managed researches most of them dedicated to aviation safety.
I have delivered lectures about:
  • all fields of psychology,
  • statistics,
  • assessment and tests construction,
  • safety and human error in complex systems,
  • and information technology.
I also was member of the French Civil Aviation Authority and the AIRBUS Human Factor groups.

Joining the skies
I left university in July 1999, to become an airline pilot.
First for the now bankrupted Air Bretagne (Vannes, France), as a manager and pilot on B100 and B200 on schedule charter flights and regular domestic routes in Europe. In April 2000, I joined a small cargo company Taxi Air Fret (Toussus-le-Noble, France) as a manager and pilot flying B90 and B99 throughout western and eastern Europe. In September 2000, I was hired by R-Lines (subsidiary of Regional CAE, which is a subsidiary of Air France) in Angers-Marcé (France), as a manager and pilot flying B1900D on scheduled passengers flights. Six months later I had been appointed captain on the B1900D.
Unfortunately, this company bankrupted in december 2003. In 2004, I decided to get a FAA ATPL with a B737 type rating in the USA.
In 1999, I was certified flight instructor (JAA FI). In 2004, I got the Multiengine Instructor (JAA CRI) and the Instrument Instructor Qualifications (JAA IRI) in 2005. Providing some flight instruction gave me the opportunity to improve my skills and experiences. Since 1999, I always instructed in Flight Training Organizations until 2006. Beside every pilot positions, I always was part of the companies management as:
  • safety manager, and / or
  • CRM manager, and / or
  • assistant training manager.
Finally, since 1992, I have been consultant in human factors and aviation safety for almost 15 years, mainly with IFSA, but also with several other organizations.

The expatriation in Asia
In February 2006, I joined Dragonair as a Manager Air Safety. Because the company merged with Cathay Pacific in June 2006, I left this position in October 2006. In February 2007, I was hired as a pilot by Hong Kong Airlines. First appointed Project Manager preparing the company for IOSA preliminary Audit, I have been sent in may 2007 to KAL-Alteon training center in Incheon (South Korea) where I got a B737NG type rating.
Then, I flew scheduled international routes to China, Vietnam, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan and and charters to Korea. I also flew on a regularly basis for the Chinese carrier Hainan Airlines wet lease domestic flights in mainland China.
In early 2008, I have been appointed Manager Human Factors, in charge of developping and organizing an in house very innovative company CRM program.
In March 2009, I got the CAAC ATPL with a B737 type rating, because the company was planning to transfer some pilots in Shanghai, flying for the cargo operator Yangtze River Express Airlines (website in Chinese only). As matter of fact, I never joined Yangtze River Express Airlines even though I have completed all the process.
At the end of June 2009, because the worlwide economic turmoil, I took the opportunity to join a Voluntary Separation Scheme offered by Hong Kong Airlines. Early this same month, I had been offered to join a rising company in Indonesia, and I have also been selected as a Captain A320 for Air Asia.
In July 2009, I chose to join PT Lion Mentari Airlines (Lion Air) in Indonesia.
I was appointed Safety Manager as well as B737-900ER pilot.
In the Safety, Security and Quality Directorate, I have conducted a continuous risk analysis of air safety and the promotion of safety awareness amongst Company staff. I was also consultant and advisor to the Safety, Security and Quality Director as the Company Senior management on Safety and Human Factors matters.
As a pilot, I flew on the Lion Air network, mainly Indonesian destinations, as the only 2 B737-900 foreign destinations: Singapore and Ho Chi Minh city.
I left the management position in April 2010 as I moved full time FO B737-900ER pilot and I definitively resigned on February 2011. The same month, I joinded Garuda Indonesia as a cockpit crew B737-800. I flew on the NG domestic and international network. In November 2011, for political and social reasons, Garuda has terminated all expats its contracts. December 2011.
